CanExelTM exterior siding has been manufactured in East River, Nova Scotia for over 40 years. CanExel has a long history of distributing this premium siding to the Canadian marketplace. CanExel captures the true aesthetic appeal of real cedar siding with uncompromising attention to detail, colour and durability.

CanWel congratulates Maibec in their acquisition and looks forward to growing this proven brand.

Products

Ridgewood D-5?

Maibec CanExel Ridgewood D-5? has the genuine look of Dutch lap siding. The multi-lap planks provide the appearance of narrow 5-inch laps but come in standard 12-foot planks that are easy to install.

Ced’R-Vue?

Maibec CanExel Ced’R-Vue? delivers the stunning beauty and durability of cedar siding without many of the drawbacks. Unlike cedar lap siding, Ced’R-Vue stands up to the Canadian sun and doesn’t stain when exposed to rain, snow and moisture.

“CanExel prefinished siding has been standing out for over 40 years for its lasting beauty. Whether it imitates cedar or Dutch lap siding or it comes in planks, it always has the gorgeous appearance of authentic wood grain and it is very durable.”

UltraPlank?

This versatile plank siding can be installed vertically or diagonally to match the personality and architecture of your home. Diagonal siding provides a traditional look while the vertical siding delivers a more contemporary feel.

This week we have the pleasure of featuring Steven Fontaine, Owner of Revêtement Fontaine in Saint-Isidore, a municipality in Québec. He introduces himself and discusses how he’s watched the family-owned business grow since he was four years old. As Steven recalls, “Having grown up with the company, it made sense for me to take over the family business when I had a chance.” This is his story, his contribution to his family enterprise and his passion for the business he took over.

CanWel: What is the history of your company?

Steven Fontaine: Revêtement Fontaine Inc. was founded in 1990. The company was operated by my father when I was a four-year-old boy. Until 2019, when I formally took over business, we worked exclusively as a subcontractor for a company in Quebec City. Since then, Revêtement Fontaine Inc. has been charting its own course. With over 35 years of experience for my father and 15 years of experience for me, we had everything we needed to succeed. After only one year, we now have six qualified carpenters who are all passionate about exterior siding, each with approximately 10 years of experience in the field. We work daily to make Revêtement Fontaine shine and to structure our growth.
We specialize in exterior siding, mainly for the new residential home market. The company is located on the South Shore of Quebec City, and we serve both the South Shore and the North Shore of the Greater Quebec City area.

What services do you offer?

We work mainly with general contractors, so they are the ones who are in direct contact with the customer. But our wealth of experience and our extensive knowledge of the products allow us to advise customers when the need arises.

“With over 35 years of experience for my father and 15 years of experience for me, we had everything we needed to succeed.”

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and why?

There is something special about every project, which is the charm of our profession. For clients, this is a particularly eagerly awaited step, as it is what will give their home its final look. It’s the first thing people will see when they arrive home.
I would have a hard time choosing one project more than another.

Why do you work with …?

More often than not, we use James Hardie? Fiber Cement Siding and LP CanExel Prefinished Siding.
Both products offer me pretty much the same advantages:

  • Quality/price ratio
  • Easy and quick installation
  • Varied and trendy colour range
  • Easy maintenance going forward for customers
  • Availability of products
What warranty do you offer on your work or the products?

We honour all the warranties we have to offer as a specialized exterior siding contractor, and since we have a very close relationship with the general contractors we deal with, if there is a problem, we are always available to manage the situation.

In our field, there are several standards that must be met. Whether it is the construction industry’s standards or the manufacturers’ standards, the key to success is to be informed, and then to do everything in compliance with the specifications. Normally, when you do that, there should not be any problems.

“Quality is more important than quantity. Returning to a site for deficiencies costs more than doing it right the first time.”

What trends do see in the future for your industry?

In my opinion, the trend in the field of siding leans towards products that are easy to maintain and that will pass the test of time. You don’t see a lot of vivid colours anymore, which is why we tend to stick to neutral colours. We’re putting more of an emphasis on a mix of materials in order to make each project unique.

Do you have a product you use that you just can’t build without?

As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy working with James Hardie fibre cement siding and CanExel LP wood fibre siding for all the reasons I listed.

How do you find out about new products?

I really enjoy talking to suppliers about the new products they offer. The industry is constantly changing and you have to keep up to date. Of course, you can look on the web, but there is nothing like seeing the sample in real life, and it’s even better if I can see a project that has already been completed.

Contractors often receive swag from manufacturers and suppliers. What’s your favourite swag?

As I already mentioned, I like to have the product samples in my hands. No doubt it’s easier to carry catalogues that I can then leave with customers, but when they get to see and touch the real product, they have a much greater appreciation for what they can expect.

In addition, as there is a continuous stream of new products, whether it’s tools, hardware or supplies, it’s always interesting to be able to test them to compare and to form your own opinion.

“Whether it is the construction industry’s standards or the manufacturers’ standards, the key to success is to be informed, and then to do everything in compliance with the specifications.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“A good contractor needs to know how to set aside his tool belt when it’s time for good planning. Good planning is the key to success.”

We have the pleasure of featuring Keith Muracz of Prairie Decks & More, as he introduces himself and discusses how he’s been doing construction work since the late 1970’s learning carpentry, plumbing and locksmithing. At the age of 16, he designed and finished the basement of the newly built family home. From there, he ran a carpentry and deck and fence business with his best friend while doing his studies.

CanWel: What is the history of your company?

Keith Muracz: I’ve been doing construction work off and on since the late 1970’s when my Dad ran a maintenance business taking care of a few old apartments in the city.

I’ve been running my own construction business for the last decade plus, have been a designated trainer with the Apprenticeship Board of Manitoba for about eight years and have had my son, Jason Clearsky, working with me for the last six. In January of this year, I brought him on as a full partner and we dropped all other aspects of construction that didn’t involve working outdoors! Thus, Prairie Decks & More was born (more of a name and focus change than a birth, per se)

For the most part, it’s just my son and I and that’s the easiest way for us to maintain quality control. We specialize in custom decks, pergolas, gazebos, fences and storage solutions.

What services do you offer?

We design scalable deck packages for presale as well as custom designs with extensive client input and involvement. I do all the design work in-house, though for larger projects we typically use a drafts-person for plan drawings. We have a penchant for adding alternate colour fascias and inserts; because we don’t think two-tone builds should be reserved for composite budgets!

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and why?

One of our favourite builds was this design in East St. Paul which featured black posts on the privacy walls and railings, black horizontal balusters and overlapping handrails. The amount of precision required in the build to get everything where we wanted it kept us on our toes. It’s a lot of clean straight lines with a lot of definition and a very modern, perhaps Asian-inspire feel. The customer is still absolutely in love with it and she is definitely the envy of her neighbourhood. It’s without a doubt, a showpiece of our design elements. We’re building decks with unique design elements a plain-wood-deck-with-2×2-balusters budget!

Why do you work with . . .?

We build all of our wood decks exclusively with MicroPro? Sienna Treated Wood. We won’t build with alternatives and we won’t build green treated anymore. Because MicroPro Sienna product is the only treated lumber we have access to with 5/4 finished surface, we don’t have to alter drawings or elevations if we’re moving between treated, cedar and composite. Plus, the sanded non-permeated surface actually looks and feels like surface.

Also, we’re huge proponents of GRK Fasteners structural anchors (we use them on every build) and Deck2Wall spacers where ledger boards are not already in place.

I’d also like to point out that IRONiK Steel Design has been a wonderful industry partner and they not only manufacture the custom steel inserts we offer with our privacy walls – they also produce our stainless steel deck tags! And what’s a deck or fence if you can’t set foot in the rest of your yard? Pawluk Landscaping has been a wonderful addition and we’re now able to offer clients their complete backyard oasis (not just a nice fence and a fancy deck!)

What warranty do you offer on your work or the products?

One of the things that I believe sets us apart in the deck and fence building area, is that we offer a 3-year warranty which covers not just labour and adjustments, but wood contact surfaces (i.e. deck surface, hand rails, steps, gates, etc.) against splintering, warping and raised or loose knots.

We realize that even at a good price, a wood deck is an investment and you should be comfortable using it for the life of the product (shoes? who needs shoes?). Since wood will dry and shrink to its capacity over the first year, any anomalies in the product that present in the first three, we’ll sand, fill, treat or replace accordingly (at our discretion, of course).

All other items and hardware carry manufacturer warranty (1 year only) but if they require replacement within that three years, at least there’s no labour bill!

The only exception is low-voltage lighting, which carries a 90-day replacement warranty.

How do you approach each project?

I have a tendency to over-design perhaps, but I like very defined, purpose-built areas on a deck. I spend a lot of time with my clients discerning what their wants and need are from their backyard space and then try to narrow the product offering so that the process is not overwhelming. I’ll often draw mock-ups with colour choices and options included if I think a customer is going for something but they don’t necessarily have it in mind. Nine times out of 10, they go ahead with our original design or something very close with a couple modifications.

What trends do see in the future for your industry?

Low and long. One of the big changes I’ve seen over the last 35 years in regard to deck building, is the lean toward low-elevation decks, unencumbered by yard size restrictions. I think even a decade ago, people would tend to build higher elevation decks or have ascending tiers and now low is the way to go. Let’s face it: in new developments, you’re often staring at four or five neighbours before your fence goes up, because of the close proximity of the homes. Do you really want to build your deck so that everyone is looking at you when you’re trying to enjoy a family BBQ outside? It’s either that or 12′ fencing! lol

Is there a product you really want to try?

I’m really interested in looking at some of the waterproof membranes on the market. We build a few decks a year with a fairly large storage space underneath (fully skirted) but so far they’ve all been with the intent of seasonal storage. I see some other deck builders doing the membranes to keep the space underneath dry. I just have concerns in our climate about snowfall accumulation but I’m sure someone here must be doing it!

Do you have a product you use that you just can’t build without?

GRK-RSS Structural anchors. We use multiple sizes in various areas of our builds. We use 5/16″ x 6″ for both ledger board installations (when using Deck2Wall spacers) and for post and privacy wall installations. We use 3-1/8″ into 4×4 when we’re attaching post to piles; gussets to post and beam. We also use 4″ when hanging our stair sets. We even use GRK finishing screws to attach our business plaques to the decks! Definitely can’t live without them!

How do you find out about new products?

I follow deck builders, manufacturers and product distributors from around the world. I love to see what processes and products my compatriots from all corners of the world employ. Often, I’ll weight the feasibility of a new product in our climate, with our materials, etc. and perhaps even come up with a different way we can employ something similar here. It’s all about best practices. I’ve been playing guitar for as long as I’ve been deck building. I’m a pretty good musician, but I’m not under any illusion that I’m done learning. My view of this trade is very much the same!

Contractors often receive swag from manufacturers and suppliers. What’s your favourite swag?

Honestly, we never receive swag! lol. I think we fly under the radar for the most part and in person at least, I try to give the impression that we’re a little more low key than we are. I’m sure swag will eventually come . . . but we also don’t like to feel obligated or indebted to one supplier, manufacturer, etc. so we show up for free pizza or the odd BBQ, people whisper, “Who are those guys?!” We eat and we disappear into the sunset.

Century Aluminum Railings — Simple to install. Easy to Enjoy

Safety is the most important aspect of any building project. Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or a commercial contractor, your finished project must be safe to be used by everyone. Century Aluminum’s innovative system is a durable and reliable railing system that is an ideal solution to ease safety concerns. Aluminum handrails add a secure handhold for extra stability, which is especially helpful for children or elderly individuals.

Century Aluminum pipe railings are an extremely versatile product that can be altered to fit a variety of settings. This railing system is suited for both outdoor or indoor environments, including staircases, pedestrian barriers, and accessibility ramps. Whether it is required by building code or additional safety precaution, pipe railings are strong, durable, and long lasting. In fact, pipe railings last over seven times longer than other fabricated handrails.

If you’re concerned about safety, take the extra precaution. Add an aluminum handrail for functionality and security.

Here are 4 ways you can incorporate pipe railings into your next residential or industrial building project.
Stair – Ramp Railings

Aluminum pipe railings are adaptable for staircases and ramps. Installing a pipe handrail is a simple, durable option to ensure the safety of any staircase or ramp. This railing system is particularly well suited for outdoor steps, as weather conditions can increase the chance of slips or falls. Aluminum handrails are an ideal railing material because they are weather resistant. Our pipe railings are made with premium powder-coated aluminum, so they won’t rust when exposed to rain or snow.

Stand-Alone Railings

Outdoor rock paths look beautiful but can be unsafe. Slippery rocks and an uneven walking surface may cause safety concerns. If you have an outdoor stone path, the addition of an aluminum handrail will add extra safety. The base of the aluminum posts can be mounted directly to secure stone steps. An aluminum handrail also acts as a barrier to separate the path from its surroundings. This is particularly important if your walking path is near an unsafe ledge. Assess the conditions of your outdoor walking path. If you are unsatisfied with your safety, consider installing a stand-alone pipe railing.

Wall-Mounted Railings

Wall-mounted railings are well-suited for commercial construction. If you use a wall-mounted flange, pipe railings can be mounted on a vertical surface. This makes aluminum pipe handrails very adaptable. Whether it is a public hallway or residential staircase, pipe railings can be adjusted to fit your building design. Aluminum pipe railings can be shaped to fit every corner or crevice. You can also cut pipe railings on-site, so you’ll have all the sizes you need.

Secondary Handrail

An aluminum handrail can be designed into your building project or added afterwards. Pipe railings can be attached to another railing as a secondary handrail. In this instance, the pipe railing adds a middle rail that is easy to grasp and protects against falls. Whether you have scenic, glass, or picket railings, you can add an aluminum handrail for extra stability. If you want to increase the safety of your current railing system, consider installing a secondary handrail.

Don’t compromise on safety, use aluminum pipe railings in your next building project. Ask for Century Railings by name at all your local building supply dealers. Century Aluminum Railings pipe railings are code compliant for residential or commercial stairways, wheelchair ramps, hospitals, and extended long-term care facilities. Before building with Century Aluminum Products, check with your local building code requirements.

This week for Contractor’s Corner, we have the pleasure of featuring Ranae Ginter of Conquest Mfg Ltd as she introduces herself and the family owned fourth generation operating business since 1956. They take their social responsibility seriously, striving to provide stable employment, and contribute to local charities and community activities.

CanWel: What is the history of your company?

Ranae Ginter: Conquest has been designing and building quality pre-fabricated, modular structures for over 60 years. We are a Prefab Modular builder specializing in single family residents, cottage living, multi family dwellings and commercial projects. All of our projects are built inside our 40,000 sq. ft. facility. We have all our own trades on staff and under one roof. Once modules are built we ship them out and assemble on site.

What services do you offer?

We are a custom builder with our entire team under one roof. From design through to final move in, we offer solutions for every step of the building process.

From our design team, carpenters, cabinetry & mill work division, certified electricians, and plumbers, we handle everything here at Conquest to provide our clients with a seamless transition through all stages of the building process.

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and why?

We have two favourite projects as we couldn’t decide between the two!

We love the Islander. It’s a more compact floor plan but so versatile. We’ve designed it so you can add modules on to the sides and put a module pod on top. There is plenty of storage options; large windows flood the main area with natural light and you can decide between 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms!

The Point Cottage was another favourite. With tight property access this cottage was built in 7 modules and then assembled on site. The entire inside is finished in beautiful white washed pine, accented with ceiling beams and pine flooring. We love the LP CanExel Prefinished Siding board and batten exterior, window trim and beams accenting the front entrance. Truly a favourite!

Why do you work with . . .?

We love working with James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding and CanExel exterior sidings. There are so many colour options and styles available, that there is always the right fit for our clients.

Another tried and true product that we regular is the MoistureShield Composite Decking and Century Aluminum Railings

“We see smaller footprints and minimalist dwellings becoming more popular trends in the housing and cottage markets.”

What warranty do you offer on your work or the products?

1 year bumper to bumper warranty and 10 year structural warranty.

How do you approach each project?

The majority of our clients come in with a lot of design ideas already in mind however, we do make suggestions and educate them on products that we would recommend for achieving their intended look and feel.

What trends do see in the future for your industry?

We see smaller footprints and minimalist dwellings becoming more popular trends in the housing and cottage markets.

We also see Prefab Modular Construction becoming a more popular and accepted form of building practice due 30%-50% reduced construction times resulting in great ROI, no weather delays, firm delivery schedules and fixed contract pricing.

Do you have a product you use that you just can’t build without?

LP SolidStart LVL & LP SolidStart LSL. We utilize both of these products on every structure we build. We pride ourselves in building the strongest wood structures around, and these products helps us achieve that.

How do you find out about new products?

Social media is probably our number one source for finding new products and design trends.

Contractors often receive swag from manufacturers and suppliers. What’s your favourite swag?

Products that we can actually use on a job site are the best items.

We have the pleasure of featuring Ryan Thompson of Right Way Building, as he introduces himself and discusses his career, and insights for aspiring contractors. He’s a great example of hard work and determination for anyone who wants to be more successful in their career.

CanWel: What is the history of your company?

Ryan Thompson: Back in 2001, I was accepted into an exclusive construction co-op class through my High school, once I finished school, I immediately started working in the field. First as a labourer, and soon after became a framing carpenter. After 4 years of learning the trade, I started my first framing company at the ripe age of 21. After years of framing residential homes for large developers, I decided take on the roll of general contractor and get into more custom renovation work. Things like additions, interior and exterior renovations, decks, fences, etc. I have grown that model today into a few hourly employees, a handful of sub trades and a list of great clientele. Starting as a rough carpenter framer, I quickly grew my skill set to offer a wide range of construction services. Basically from the hole in the ground to the shingles on the roof and everything in-between. We do use licensed and certified electricians and plumbers for those aspects of the job.

“Starting as a rough carpenter framer, I quickly grew my skill set to offer a wide range of construction services.”

What services do you offer?

We offer building solutions from concept to reality using our own in house design team. We pride ourselves on attention to detail from start to finish.

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and why?

One of my all time faves would have to be one of the latest deck builds we did using MicroPro? Sienna Treated Wood. We designed and built a custom deck for some very special clients, incorporating some privacy shutters and even a hidden hatch for access to the homes crawl space. We really enjoy these types of projects for the creative aspects involved. Working with the client and using the right products to capture the clients vision is extremely important for us.

Why do you work with . . . ?

MicroPro? is a great option because it’s not only cost effective, but it looks great and it’s also eco-friendly, which is very important to us and our clients.

What warranty do you offer on your work or the products?

We offer a 10-year warranty on all labour/installation. We do not currently offer a warranty on products.

How do you approach each project?

We listen to what the customer wants first and then make suggestions based on their style preference and overall vision of the project.

“We pride ourselves on attention to detail from start to finish.”

What trends do see in the future for your industry?

We are really seeing a trend towards outdoor living spaces lately. People are realizing the benefits of creating outdoor living spaces not only in value, but their own enjoyment.

What’s your favourite accessory product?

I really like working with the privacy shutters for outdoor projects. It’s a great way to block out the sun when needed… or those nosy neighbours – lol.

Is there a product you really want to try?

I really would like to get into incorporating outdoor lighting in our projects.

How do you find out about new products?

Social media, talking and networking with other contractors and Google.

Contractors often receive swag from manufacturers and suppliers. What’s your favourite swag?

We love all types of swag, from merch to tools and new products to test.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“It’s not how many nails you use, it’s how you use them.”

Right Way Building
